Sat here packing and repacking the bike ready for Scotland this weekend. Two lovely lined hessian Tespit bag-for-lifes sit one in each leather pannier, holding changes of clothing, towel, wash-kit… sorted. But how about the camera…?
Last year I went with a heavy bag full of kit. Canon 5D mkIII plus 11-24 F4, 24-105 F4 and 100-400 F4.5-5.6. Of the 101 photo’s I kept of that trip 78 were with the 24-105 and only eight were with the ultra-wide and five with the long. Ten were with the iPhone!
Ought I carry these stupidly heavy lenses all the way there and back? In fact it’s not the journey there and back at all – ought I carry it about when I’m there? The 11-24 is a fantastic lens (and fantastically expensive, and heavy), but it doesn’t get the love it deserves. The long is probably a given, just in case…
On the other hand, this year’s trip is taking in a few more fun places… not only Islay but Jura and Mull too, and a few days in Oban. Dammit, what to do.
