One step back.
I could put up with a lot – obsolete scanner, obsolete web cam, obsolete NAS… but I need my printer. It’s a feature of early adopters that one loses a whole load of stuff that previously worked fine, then eventually all the drivers are written and distributed. But if I can’t print it all falls down…
I’ve spent a happy few hours trashing the 64 bit Windows 7 and installing the 32 bit. There’s next to no difference on this computer- it’s limited to 4GB RAM anyway and both installations are only making use of three, which again is probably a ‘feature’ of this Asus A8N32 SLI Deluxe motherboard. The overall ‘score’ in new Windows 7 speak is 5.4. On a scale of 1 to 7.9 I suppose that’s pretty good for a three and a half year old computer. I did note many brand new computers on display at PCWorld were stuck in the 3’s…
I recall this happening with XP too; I reinstalled a couple of times before it all went right. It’s a way of learning I guess, and I can restore from scratch in about three hours. When the dust has settled, perhaps I’ll try 64 bit again.
