The title’s a bit of a mouthful, but the gig last night was splendid. Taiko means ‘Big Drum’ in Japanese, and the drums played last night were certainly that, in size and sound. Shakuhachi is a Japanese end-blown bamboo flute, and the combination made for an excellent evening of Japanese traditional, free-form jazz and plain old rhythmic noise, played unamplified in the venue’s main hall.
I guess, having missed it (unless you are in Gateshead tomorrow night), you might try some of the artists’ links.
