Heron’d

Looks like the pond in the back garden has been visted by a heron. No fish evident; although there is considerable pond weed to hide under, so there may be a few left… [sigh] the cycle of life, eh? Up until last week there were at least thirty fish in there. Six five year old ghost koi, some red koi, and assorted goldfish. Still, it was also evident that the newts are back, so not all bad.

  1. It may be closing the barn door after the horses have bolted, but I’ve heard that erecting a line or string a couple of inches from the ground, all around the edge of the pond will stop a heron from going in it, because they don’t like lifting their legs to step over things like string.

    Might be worth trying?

  2. Herons, mate. Not horses… 🙂

Thanks for the thought, I was aware of the anti-heron line but haven’t used it previously as it doesn’t look aesthetically pleasing. I expect the fish would have voted for it though… I did see a PIR water jetter the other day, that aims water at a detected poolside pest, but you just know it’s going to be me that gets soaked.
